Newsletter Issue 10: 11th September 2023

So much has happened in recent weeks…

Our gymnastics program has now finished. There has been positive feedback from all teachers, and students have been very positive about the program.

Inter-school competitions in futsal and basketball were enjoyed at Reservoir High’s sporting facility. The senior basketball boys team won on the day so were feeling really pleased with themselves when they were presented with their medals.

During Science Week we were bursting at the seams; so many parents came into classrooms to join in some interesting Science experiments and activities.

Parents of our senior students participated in a Puberty Education forum, as the students were taking part in lessons.

Book Week was also a great success – it’s so much fun seeing the innovative and creative outfits that come along.

And we have a very exciting new event for families happening on Wednesday this week – our STEM “ARCADE”! See further details on the flyer inside.

UPCOMING EVENTS

SUPERHIRO DAY – Wednesday 16th August

National Bullying Prevention Week is on the 14th August to the 20th August.
Our school has decided to participate in SuperHIRO Wednesday which is hosted by Bully Zero – an annual fun day that involves schools, workplaces and the community wearing their favourite superhero outfit (or symbol) on Wednesday 16th August 2023. Students do not have to wear a superhero costume (although they are welcome to do so), they may also dress as someone who is a superhero to them.

SCIENCE MORNING – Thursday 17th August 9.15am

National Science Week is on the 12th to the 20th August and to celebrate we will be hosting Science Morning. You are invited to join us!
Each class will participate in a Science activity prepared by their teacher. Classrooms will be open for families from 9:15 on Thursday morning.
Please note, this session will be finished by 10:45 to allow for pack up before eating time.
We hope to see you there!

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Hi everyone,

Things are moving along with our buildings; many changes have taken place inside our old building as well as in the areas surrounding it.

The weather is also starting to improve – let’s cross our fingers and hope this is the beginning of Spring.

Beginning last week, we are welcoming our future students; our Preps in 2024.

They are visiting and spending time with our current students and having a great time. It is such an important step as it allows them to become familiar with their school environment.

Over the coming weeks, we will have sporting activities in basketball and indoor soccer. Two teams from Years 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 will take part in these competitions with other schools in our district.

Camp is also only one and a half weeks away for Years 5 & 6; a terrific opportunity for them.

Our Gymnastics program moving along and is extremely popular. We will provide you with more photos very soon. But maybe you could ask your children about it. As we are using a different company, some feedback would be really great.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

What a term it was!

Well, that’s Term Two done and dusted. But what a term it was! As terms go, it was short – nine weeks, but so much happened that somehow it seems like it’s been quite long.

But all the events were positive, with great outcomes for the students at Reservoir. 

Exciting Experiences

Students have enjoyed many different experiences across these nine weeks:

Basketball clinics
Seven weeks of inter-school sports
Cross country runs
Excursions to Fed Square, CERES, Jewellery exhibitions and Edwardes Street for comparisons between “Reservoir then and Now”
Incursions have included the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Money Matters
It has also been great to see so many parents helping out in classrooms – we’re almost at the pre-Covid levels with parents working with teachers to strengthen the students’ learning experiences.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

We have moved!

We have moved – and after two weeks of hard work by staff, we now feel settled in our new spaces. Senior students are really enjoying their new classrooms and the surrounding areas outside on the decks; nothing like sitting in the sun and looking out at the great view west of us. All students have now also had lessons in the library, the Art Room, and the STEM.

Prep Enrolments for 2024

We would really appreciate the enrolment forms and accompanying documents before the end of term if possible. During next term we are offering Prep Transition sessions each week, so look out for that; information will be posted on our website. The more the children come to school to visit us, the more familiar and comfortable they will feel when they begin school in 2024.

Parent Teacher & Student Conferences

Wednesday 21st June is our Reporting Day. Each family will be invited to make a time to meet their child’s teacher. At this three-way conference, we do expect your child to be present and take an active part in these discussions around their learning.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Welcome back for Term 2!

Welcome back to you all, I trust you all had some terrific time away from the school routines whether it was holidaying, camping or just resting and relaxing at home.

The “Big Move”

This term is short in comparison to the first term; nine weeks. However, there is quite a bit in store – we have now been told that moving out of the main building is imminent. In two weeks we will be making the “big move” into the STEAM building and the new reception area on the corner of O’Connor Street.

Uniform & Miscellaneous Items

After this Friday 5th May, we won’t have access to the uniform until we unpack everything – this may be a few weeks later. So, I suggest you make any winter purchases very soon.

There is also a large amount of second hand uniform items – we are practically giving them away (prices ranging from 50 cents to $2 a piece) so please think ahead of the colder days and come and get some warm clothing as soon as possible this week!

Reports & Interschool Sports

June reporting takes place during the last week of the term, and of course senior students are looking forward to inter-school sports on Fridays this term.

What an exciting week it’s been! Harmony Day on Tuesday and then Ride2School on Friday.

Bike and Blend

The big surprise was the Bike and Blend – we certainly used our pedal power. But the smoothies were delicious. That was a surprise gift for our school from Darebin Council! See page 4 for photos.

School Council

We have a new School Council. After our first meeting we can provide you with information on those parents who are on Council to represent you, the parent body and support our school.

I would like to thank those parents who are retiring from their position on Council. They have supported the school in so many ways over periods ranging from two years through to eight.

The school owes them a huge debt of gratitude; thank you Linda Angeloni, Ahmet Yilmaz, Anita Gupta and Jodie Barker.

NAPLAN

During the last two weeks, Year 3 and Year 5 students had the NAPLAN experience. Whilst these results provide a snapshot of where students sit in the curriculum areas, we all must remember that is it a one-off test on one day, under conditions that can be tricky.

What a busy couple of weeks we have had!

Family Picnic

Our Family Picnic was a terrific evening. Whilst the jumping castles were in the gym, the grass on the back oval area was a popular spot too.

Delicious picnic food and great company really brought the school community together. You will see many pictures on Page 3 of this newsletter.

Athletics Day

Then the senior students went to Edwardes Park Athletics Track for some wonderful competition and experiences in all the fields of athletics; running, high jump, long jump, discus, shot put and triple jump.

We were greatly supported by parents on the day – a huge thank you!

The other person who I wish to congratulate is an ex- student of ours; Lynton Martin. As an active member of the Reservoir Little Athletics Club, he was there during the day making sure our events were set up and all equipment was available.

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Four Weeks Already Completed

The school has a wonderful calm feeling that just oozes happy students – happy to be with their friends and new teachers and happy in their learning.

Next Monday, our Prep students begin attending five days a week – no more Wednesdays as the day of rest! All sixty Preps are extremely settled into their new classrooms and the routines of our school day.

Family Picnic Night

Get out your picnic baskets and be ready for Wednesday – the first day of March and a perfect time to enjoy getting to know other members of our school community. There will be jumping castles (free) and an ice cream van (not free – sorry). We may be able to organise a coffee van too. The Ice Cream van prefers cash, so make sure you have coins or a few notes in your pockets.

Newsletter Issue 1: 10th February 2023

How lovely to be back to normal!
Last week our students spent time regrouping with old friends, forming new relationships and displaying excellent learning behaviours. Our first two groups of students received Achievement Awards or Student of the Week awards. We also welcome many new faces and I have been lucky enough to have spent some of the first few days checking in with our many new students.
Welcoming Preps
Of course, our Prep students have arrived and are extremely well settled into their new classrooms; they even joined the rest of the school at assembly on Friday. In moving around the school, it’s fantastic to see the wonderful supports and learning tasks that we offer. It’s terrific to know that our staff are working hard to ensure that all our students are thriving in an environment that values and celebrates learning and encourages gratitude and self-esteem.
